Remind Texting App & Parent Night Presentation

I really enjoyed seeing so many faces at Parent Night last night!  If you were unable to attend, I have attached a link to the Power Point presentation below.  If you were having issues connecting to the Remind 101 app, it is because my slide with the information left the @ symbol off the code to join.  I apologize.  The correct method to join and get text message reminders about our class is to text @e44ca2 to the number 81010.  E-mail me if this still doesn't work for you.

Make sure your student completes the math test review homework tonight for tomorrow's math test over module #1.

Welcome!

Welcome to Mrs. Atkins' class 2017.  We finally got school started after Harvey and are into our second week now.  Students have completed getting to know you projects, learned classroom rules and procedures, and have even visited the library already.

Mrs. Reaves came to talk about Student Council officer elections today.  Interested students need to turn in completed applications by Friday, September 22.  Late forms will NOT be accepted.  Candidates need to be prepared to give a short, 2-3 minute speech to the 5th grade on Thursday the 28th.  Officer elections will be held on Thursday, September 28.  The following week, students may choose to run for class representative.  Permission slips for that will come home after officer elections are held.

5th graders are off an running in every content area.  In math, students are investigating place value, decimals, and rounding.  There will be a module 1 test on Thursday, September 21.  Students should be memorizing multiplication facts to 12X12.  Timed quizzes are already taking place.  In science, we are studying matter, and will have a test on Tuesday, Sept. 26.  During the first week of school, students reviewed map skills in Social Studies.  This week, we are focusing on explorers, and next week we will learn about the early American settlements, like Jamestown.  There will be a test over chapter 3 on the 28th.  In language we will be reviewing grammar skills such as capitalization, ending punctuation and quotation marks.  Sentences have also been a focus this week.  Complete sentences, sentence parts, and combining sentences will be covered in class.  Tuesday, September 26 is the date of our review test for language.  Mrs. Atkins' class is full of readers this year!  We have started our DEAR, silent reading time, and it is going very well.  Students should also be reading 20-30 minutes per night as part of daily homework.  Topics for reading study these first few weeks include affixes, context clues, summarizing and identifying main idea.  Our first reading test will be on 9/28.

I hope you enjoy keeping up with our class on this blog throughout the year.  I try to update once a week.  Look for pictures, work samples, internet resources, wish lists, schedules, important dates, and lots of other helpful information.

I hope to see everyone at Parent Night tonight.
